All at Hawick Rugby Club were greatly saddened to learn of the death in New Zealand of Hawick’s oldest internationalist, 93 year old Norman Davidson. The first baby to be born in the Haig Maternity Home, he won seven caps between 1952 and 1954 playing out of Edinburgh University. He captained Scotland in his final international against France in 1954. “The Green Machine – 125 Years of Hawick Rugby” describes him as “a classic stand-off who was blessed with startling acceleration, adhesive hands and the ability to kick with either foot”. He also represented and captained Scotland at cricket. Qualifying as a doctor he emigrated to New Zealand in 1960. After quite a search Norman was tracked down to contribute to the Club’s 150th anniversary “Voices of Hawick Rugby” book for which he provided amazingly clear memories of playing in the Jedforest Sevens tournament of 1954. He concluded his contribution “I have wonderful memories of playing rugby for Hawick and of the splendid team-mates I played with. The Greens are the beating heart of Hawick and they will always be a very special team”. He also sent a memorable video clip which was shown at our 150th Dinner. Our sincere condolences go to his wife Margaret and the family.
