Everyone associated with Hawick Rugby were saddened earlier this week on hearing the news of the passing of Rob Valentine. The youngest of three Valentine brothers, together with Dave and Alec, he wore the Green jersey with pride and distinction.
A dynamic back-row forward Rob played his part in the all conquering Hawick sides of the early 60’s. He began his rugby playing for the semi-junior side Hawick Wanderers, before progressing to Hawick Linden. There his talent was spotted by the Greens selectors, and when Adam Robson was selected for the South, there was a knock on Rob’s door! He went on to play for Hawick on more than 60 occasions, during which time, deserved recognition came in the form of South of Scotland honours. Indeed, his last game at Mansfield Park was for the South, against Wilson Whineray’s ‘64 All Blacks. That day as part of an all Hawick back row, a pack boasting 6 Hawick men, and a team including 9 Robbie Dyes, Rob played his part as the Borderers pushed the New Zealanders all the way, eventually only losing out 8-0 to a solitary try and late drop goal. Rob was hotly tipped by many to go on to win a Scottish cap however, immediately after that South game, it was announced in the Sunday papers that Rob was turning professional, following in the steps of big brother Dave, initially joining the ranks of Huddersfield Giants.
His later distinguished rugby league career was well documented in Alistair Redpath’s recent trilogy of articles on the Valentine family for the Hawick Paper.
One of so many gifted Hawick players of his generation, Rob was a humble and proud family man, who like so many performed tremendous heroics on the rugby field but off the pitch were full of humility.
The writer remembers fondly, one Saturday morning on the rugby pitches at the top of Wilton Lodge Park, Oliver Grant was watching his nephew playing for the school. As the game progressed a couple of men joined Oliver on the touchline, and the three quietly enjoyed the youngsters giving their all. Very few watching that game would realise that the three men in question were Oliver Grant, Rob Valentine & Derrick Grant, the very back row that all those years ago, gave Whineray’s All Blacks one hell of a time!
Everyone at Mansfield Park would like to send our most sincere condolences to Rob’s wife Doreen and all the family.
Rest in peace Rob. 🏉💚
