Hawick vs HeriotsΒ
It was a tough day at the office on Saturday for the Greens, as they came up against a very strong and well drilled Heriots side, who ultimately took the spoils by 19- 39.
The men from Goldenacre came out of the blocks the quicker and showed their intent with a very powerful set piece combined with a dynamic running game, leading to their being a couple of tries to the good before the Greens were stung into action. A well worked move with slick interplay, resulting in quick hands and a miss pass from Kirk Ford finding Ronan McKean in space for the touch down, Ford converted from out wide to make the score 7-12.
Having fought their way back into the game, Hawick will be desperately disappointed to have then conceded a further 3 tries before the break, especially when their defence had been so solid when facing Marr last week. Halftime came with the score 7 - 27.
However with so many changes in the pack from last season, the Greens are still finding their feet, and it was good to see that in the second half they started to see more of the ball and tighten up their defence.
Although Heriots scored a further two tries in the second period, as Hawick rung the changes of the bench they started to show more in attack and they upped their physicality around the breakdown, leading firstly to skipper Shawn Muir crossing from close range, and then almost immediately, from a penalty to the corner and a powerful line-out drive, Sean Linton did well to peel round the blindside to go over in the corner for the Greens third try. In a frantic last few minutes Hawick chased the 4th try bonus point and although they had the crowd on their feet as they rallied once again, it was not to be.
Both coaches and players alike will know what needs to be worked on at training this week, and much emphasis will be put in analysing these key areas, in preparation for our train to a Malleny Park this weekend to face Currie Chieftains.Β
