Hawick 31 - 40 Watsonians
The Greens once again came agonisingly close to picking up more than just a loosing try bonus point yesterday, against a very strong Watsonians side. The final score ending at 31-40 to the visitors.
Hawick came out of the blocks so much better then in previous weeks, resulting in a finely worked try by Ronan McKean. However a couple of momentary lapses in concentration combined with the power and precision of the Myreside pack left the Greens trailing 7-21 after 20 minutes.
Hawick however looked dangerous every time they approached their opponents 22 and powerful running and support play set up barnstorming runs from firstly Jae Linton and then Andrew Mitchell, which saw them both leave the Watson’s defence floundering, as they crossed for excellent scores to see the game poised at halftime 19-21.
Unfortunately the first 10 minutes of the second half saw the Greens game management slip below par and Watsonians were able to capitalise scoring 3 tries in quick succession, to leave the Greens faithful reeling with the score at 19-40.
Once again however this Greens side rallied and when able to retain possession, they were able to put together several good phases of play, asking some serious questions of the ‘Sonians defence. Firstly Andrew Mitchell cut another fine line as he ran over the cover defence, Lee Armstrong converting 26-40.
This was followed by a tremendous drive up the pitch culminating in Jae Linton drawing the last defender to put Ronan McKean over in the corner for his second and Hawick’s 5th try. Armstrong’s conversion just drifting wide 31-40.
Hawick were able to put together one last opportunity when Watsonians were pinged for an infringement, only for Lee Armstrong’s long range penalty (which would have secured a losing bonus point), to rebound off the upright.
The Greens played some terrific rugby for long periods of this game, however the physicality and strength in depth of another of the former Suoer Six sides is difficult to contain, and warrants complete focus and concentration for the full 80 minutes, It was however great to see some big performances from many of our established players, together with the continued development and performance level of some of our young Greens, Hughie Donaldson, Murray Renwick, Keenan Gobby and Tom Huggan, who fronted up in no uncertain terms.
Next week the Greens head to Musselburgh for a game they will know is of huge significance as an important run of games through the month of October begin. 🏉💚
