It turned out to be a tough day at the office for Hawick at Millbrae on Saturday as the home side ran out winners by 59-7.
Following Ayr scoring two quick fire tries in the first 10 minutes, Hawick hit back with an excellent score from deep as Andrew Mitchell broke through the home defence taking play deep into the Ayr 22. Quick ball was then shipped from Logan Henry to Kirk Ford who dived over to score a fine try which he duly converted to make it 12-7.
Unfortunately for the Greens the Millbrae men were able to hit back with a further score, however at 19-7 Hawick were unlucky, (following a quick silver move down the blindside), for their live-wire winger Matt Reid to have been adjudged to have a foot in touch just as he touched down. Hawick enjoyed some decent periods of possession in the latter stages of the first half and even though Kirk Ford went close again, had the Greens been able to show a little more composure and breach a strong Ayr defence it could have made the halftime team talk interesting. However the Greens unfortunately were driven back up the park and Ayr who were lethal on the counter, grabbed their 4th try on the stroke of half-time, making the score 26-7.
The Greens found themselves on the back foot in the second half, and although having forays into their opponents 22, they had to work extremely hard in trying to contain the unquestionable strength in depth coming off the Ayr bench, which in truth too hot to handle on the day. Final score Ayr 59 - 7 Hawick.
Apologies from the writer, for the lack of quality images this week, a combination of dreadful floodlighting and dubious camera settings has meant that the number of action shots are limited.
With a break from Premiership rugby this coming week, Hawick will regroup for their Border League match against Jedforest on Friday night at Mansfield Park.
